How to Make Saline Water at Home?
A saline solution can work wonders in many situations, such as a sore throat, cuts or skin infections, and the best part is that it can be made in minutes by quickly mixing two ingredients in your kitchen.
Read on to learn the right proportions to make a natural and effective solution.
How to Make Saline Water?
Saline Solution on The Stove
Put a cup of water and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in the pan. This makes 230 ml of water and 2.5 grams of salt. Make sure the salt is free of iodine and does not contain preservatives, coloring, flavoring or anything else unnecessary.
1/2 teaspoon looks like a lot, right? It’s okay to add a little more for adults, but just a little more. The solution should be similar to tears. This means 0.9% saline solution.
- Boil for 15 minutes.
- Close the lid of the pot as soon as it starts to boil.
- If you do not use a lid, too much water will boil and evaporate, and the solution will be too salty.
- Use the solution.
- The most common use of the salt solution is to clean the sinuses, relieve sore throat, or rinse contact lenses.
- All you have to do is make sure the solution is safe and suitable for what you are considering using
- If you are going to gargle, wait for it to cool a little so it doesn’t burn your throat. The water should be hot enough but not hot enough to burn you. The same is true when you use it on your nose or skin; You better not make the problem worse!
- Fill the rest of the solution into a sterile jar, bottle or glass.
- The container must be sterile so that the solution does not lose its effect. You can boil the container to sterilize it.
Saline Solution on Microwave
How to make saline water in the microwave? We need as pure salt as possible.
It should not be of scented, colored or flavored salts. Make sure it is iodine-free and free of preservatives.
If there is anything other than salt in it, it can irritate your skin, the inside of your nose, or whatever you’re using it for.
- Put 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 g) of salt in a glass.
- You will try to mimic the salt content of your tears by making a regular solution containing 0.9 percent salt.
- Half a teaspoon is correct for fine table salt, but not for sea salt because you have to use twice the volume of fine salt for 2.5 g of that salt. For children, the salt amount can be kept a little low; it may be a little saltier for adults.
- In some recipes, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda is used. You can add it if you want. However, this is not necessary for a normal solution.
- These measurements are valid for a glass (230 ml) of water. If you’re using more water, increase the salt as well.
- Add salt to 230 ml (1 glass) of hot water and mix well. Microwave the water for a minute, use an electric heater, or otherwise bring it to a temperature where it gets hot but not boiling.
- You must run the microwave for over 1 minute to keep it sterile. Using a glass bowl with a lid is quicker, but if you heat it for a long time, the lid may open due to the accumulated steam. Use a spoon to help dissolve the salt.
- Make sure you mix it well.
- If the mixture looks dirty or cloudy, pour it out.
Warnings
- If you want to be cautious, use pure water (or boiled water until it boils). This ensures that everything is sterile and hygienic.
- Depending on the situation, you can use the saline solution to clean part of your body or to gargle. But don’t swallow. It is worth noting that this solution is not used for open wounds either.
- Do not immerse the piercings in the solution. Just clean the area because the saline solution can dry the surrounding areas considerably.
- If you have a sore throat, gargle with the solution morning and evening.
- For nail infections and other skin infections (but not open wounds) soak the limb with salt water 4 times a day. This method may take days or weeks to effect.
- Throw away the solution after 24 hours. If you’re going to keep all (or some) of it, close a lid and store it in an airtight container for up to 24 hours. The solution must be fresh to be safe and effective.
- Don’t boil the water. Let it be as hot as you can stand, but don’t boil.
- If symptoms don’t go away, see a doctor as soon as possible.
- If you are not sure whether you have an infection, see a doctor.
